How Many Days for the Best Universal Orlando Vacation

How Many Days for the Best Universal Orlando Vacation

Universal Orlando has fast roller coasters, fun rides, exciting experiences, parades, and favorite characters all themed from your favorite Hollywood movies. What started out as one park in 1990, Universal Orlando has slowly been growing over the last few decades and is now four parks!

I have been going to Universal Orlando for years and love the all rides and experiences. And since they continue to expand, there is something new to discover year after year. Even though it is known more for its fast roller coasters, there are kiddie rides and experiences for everyone to enjoy. My toddler loves the slower rides, kiddie coasters, play areas, shows, and using her wand for magic around the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

For more information on the rides, check out Best Rides at Universal Orlando!

So the question remains, how many days do you need for visiting Universal Orlando, Florida?

The answer may vary depending on where you are staying, if you’re staying on property, and if you get an express pass. Don’t worry, I’ll cover all of that in this post!

A Bit of History

Universal Studios was the first Universal theme park in Orlando, Florida to open on June 7, 1990 followed shorty by Islands of Adventure opening on May 28, 1999. Universal Orlando remained just these two parks until May 25, 2017 when Volcano Bay, the Polynesian themed water park, opened. Lastly, Epic Universe, the newest of the the theme parks just recently opened on May 22, 2025!

The 4 Parks

Each park has multiple themed lands with corresponding rides and attractions in each one. Let’s dive into the four parks and what you can experience at each one.

Gringotts Bank in Diagon Alley

Universal Studios

The OG Park, Universal Studios, has seven themed lands! I would plan one day for this park.

  • Illumination’s Minion Land – Become a minion on the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem attraction, prove you’re worthy of being a villain in Villain-Con Minion Blast, meet minions and other characters from Despicable Me, and enjoy some tasty treats!
  • New York – My favorite ride, Revenge of the Mummy, can be found in this land along with two other rides. As you stroll down the streets, keep an eye out for Transformers, Pharaohs, The Blues Brothers, a dance party, and drummers that come and go throughout the day.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley – With a park-to-park ticket, head into King’s Cross Station and take The Hogwarts Express to Islands of Adventure. If you’re strolling down London after exiting Kings Cross, pay attention to details, or you might miss the entrance to Diagon Alley, and see if you can spot a house elf in the windows.
Travel through the brick wall to Diagon Alley, get a wand at Ollivanders and start casting spells! Experience shops, delicious food, and performances of songs and Tales of Beedle the Bard. Also, help Harry, Ron, and Hermione escape Gringotts on the thrill ride!
  • World Expo – Don’t bypass this small area because you’ll miss out on MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack! A fun ride to see if you have what it takes to be a part of the Men in Black.
  • Springfield – If you love The Simpsons, you need to visit Springfield. There are two rides and plenty of snack shops. Lard Lad Donuts is where you’ll find the famous big pink donuts!
  • DreamWorks Land – Every toddler’s dream (maybe a parent’s nightmare?). This land is filled with playgrounds, splash pads, a kiddie coaster, shows, and character meet and greets that feature Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Trolls, Gabby’s Dollhouse, and more! There is so much packed into this area you could fill an entire afternoon if you have a little one.
Parent tip- bring a change of clothes for your toddler! My toddler loved the splash pad and got soaking wet. We didn’t have time to run back to the hotel to change before our dinner reservation and had to buy her a new shirt and pants in the gift shop!
  • Hollywood – This land is filled mostly with entertainment shows, character meet and greets, and the parade. You might even see Marilyn and the Diamond Bellas singing through the streets!

Islands of Adventure

This might be my favorite Universal Park, if I had to pick a favorite (but thank goodness I don’t because of park-to-park tickets, more on that later). It has two of my favorite rides and lands! I would plan one day for this park also.

  • Marvel Super Hero Island – Into the world of Marvel Comic Books! There is a ride for everyone, plenty of snacks, and you can even meet your favorite superhero.
  • Toon Lagoon – Meet more comic book characters such as Betty Boop, Popeye, and Olive Oyl! The rides here are water rides. You don’t just get splashed, you get soaked!
Pro tip- wear swimsuits under quick-dry clothes and ride at midday to cool off. The Florida sun will dry you out before it gets dark.
  • Skull Island: Reign of Kong – This small area has one ride with a huge animatronic King Kong head. It’s pretty cool, but you can just pass on by to get to…
  • Jurassic Park – As a huge Jurassic Park fan, nothing beats walking through those doors. The river adventure is a classic and the VelociCoaster is so fun! There’s even a few areas for kids to play and learn all about dinosaurs and even encounter a raptor.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade – Another favorite of mine! I could spend all morning here. Hagrid’s ride is my favorite and now that there is an express lane for it, so I can ride it multiple times a day!
Get breakfast at the Three Broomsticks for a delicious, filling meal. Remember, The Hogwarts Express can help you park hop to Universal Studios. Want to see some extra magic? Ride the Hogwarts Express both ways 😉
Keep an eye on the stage for some singing and entertainment. If you’re going with young kids, there is a kiddie coaster and you won’t want to miss Olivanders Experience in Hogsmeade. There are more spells to cast here so bring your wand!
  • The Lost Continent – This world is best known for its yummy quick service food and dining at the award-winning Mythos Restaurant. You will need a reservation to dine there so book early. Also, take a peek at the Mystic Fountain for some magical fun!
  • Seuss Landing – Great for young kids! This land has kiddie rides, play areas, and character meet and greets. Look for, If I Ran The Zoo, it’s a hidden gem for younger toddlers.

Volcano Bay

If you like water parks, this is the park for you! Plan on one day for this park.

  • Wave Village – A relaxing beach at the base of the volcano and next to a leisure pool with a slide and waterfall for adults and kids.
  • The Volcano – Brave the volcano and try out some body slides and the Krakatau Aqua Coaster!
  • Rainforest Village – For the adventurer, this land has lots of raft rides and a whitewater river! Little ones will enjoy Puka Uli Lagoon.
  • River Village – If you’re looking for the lazy river, River Village is the place to be! There are also splash pads for kids and toddlers and thrilling innertube rides.

Epic Universe

The newest park may only have five themed lands but it is LARGE. The lands are more spaced out compared to the other parks, plus the detail and immersive feel is intense! Give yourself two days to fully experience this park. Read 7 Tips for Visiting Universal’s Epic Universe for tips on visiting Epic Universe.

  • Celestial Park – Passing through the first portal into Epic Universe brings you right into Celestial Park. There are restaurants, quick service snacks, and two rides. From here, you can travel through any of the other portals to reach the other four worlds and the new Helios Hotel.
  • Super Nintendo World – Transport through the green tube right into Super Nintendo Land! Purchase a Power-Up Band and connect to the app to play around this land. There are even interactive buttons while waiting in line for the rides. You can also meet your favorite characters and enjoy Nintendo-themed snacks!
  • Dark Universe – Spooky sights, scary monsters, and thrilling rides- a horror movie lover’s dream. Stay alert! Monsters will be out and about scaring and interacting with guests. Be sure to book ahead if you want to transform into a monster in the Monster Makeup Experience.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic – This portal takes you to France where there are lots of shopping and dining options. This area has more elements from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them like the live show Le Cirque Arcanus. Inside the red tent, see an incredible circus show featuring fantastic beasts inside Newt Scamander’s suitcase! This was my toddler’s favorite show.
Take the flu to The only ride in this universe inside the Ministry of Magic. Even if you don’t want to ride the thrill ride, you can still walk around inside the Ministry.
  • How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk – This might be my favorite universe in Epic Universe. The dragons are awesome and the food is tasty! Toothless steels the spotlight in The Untrainable Dragon live show. And don’t skip meeting your favorite characters and dragons in the Haddock Paddock.

Savvy Ways to Maximize Your Time at the Parks

Ticket type, where you stay, and express passes all make a difference in how much time you have in the parks. Read on to find out how to maximize your time in the parks and ride all the rides.

Park Tickets

There are two types of park tickets, one park per day tickets and multiple parks per day. Just as it sounds, one park per day tickets will give you admission to one park per day and multiple parks per day will give you admission to multiple parks per day (this is the ticket you need to ride The Hogwarts Express).

When purchasing tickets, consider which parks you want to go to and which lands are most important for you to visit. You can also ask your travel agent to help you determine what tickets work best for your needs. It is possible to save a bit and purchase tickets for only Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe if you want to skip Volcano Bay.

Multiple park per day tickets, or park-to-park tickets, are especially good for visiting Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. The parks are right next to each other making it easier to go between the two and you can take The Hogwarts Express to get from one park to the other.

Currently, for 2025, tickets for Epic Universe are ONLY for Epic Universe. You cannot use a multiple park per day ticket for admission to Epic Universe. This will most likely change in 2026.

Stay at a Universal Resort Hotel

Staying at any Universal Resort Hotel will give you early park admission! Look ahead at the calendar to see what park has early access to you can plan your park days.

Three of the Signature Hotels will get you an Express Unlimited Pass every day of your stay, that grant you access to the Express Lane at any participating attraction as many times as you want, but only at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. The three hotels are: Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Royal Pacific Resort.

These hotels are at the top of the hotel price range but with the Express Unlimited Pass it is worth it! Your wait time for rides is cut in half and you get priority seating at restaurants in the parks and City Walk. These hotels are also closest to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure with a walking path and a water taxi to City Walk.

If you plan on spending more time at Epic Universe, The Helios Hotel, Terra Luna, and Stella Nova are the closest. At this time, Epic Express Passes are sold separately and not a part of any hotel.

Express Passes

Express Passes are a great way to ride more rides during your day at the park. Wait times for the express lane are much shorter than the regular standby queue. There are two types of Express Passes, Express and Express Unlimited.

Express Passes will you get you in the Express Lane of participating attractions one time per day. Express Unlimited, as I stated earlier, will get you in the Express Lane of participating attractions as many times as you want in one day!

You can purchase daily Express Passes separately or as part of your package. I recommend booking express passes ahead of time because they can sell out if you wait to book them on the day.
